San Francisco Art Openings: New Langton Arts

NEW LANGTON ARTS:
VERSION; KOTA EZAWA, MICHELE O'MARAH
OPENING 09.17.04

Comment: Ezawa and O'Marah take existing audio and video recordings-- in this case, of John Lennon, Susan Sontag, Joseph Beuys, and a potpourri of 1970's crime-caper films-- and reconfigure, mix, simultaneize, juxtapoz, reconstruct, overlay, and/or reanact them with amateur actors or animation. It's the kind of art where you don't just come in cold, take a look, and get it. You have to either read about it and/or listen while someone explains it to you. You also have to be familiar with Lennon, Sontag, Beuys and 1970's crime film genre in the first place. You also have to know something about the specific films and/or sound tracks and/or videos that have here been transmogrified. Now you're ready to critically observe and analyze Ezawa's and O'Marah's art. Assuming due diligence, you can reasonably expect to experience a modicum of satisfaction and/or accomplishment on some level within your artistic being.

Artist/Artists: Kota Ezawa, Michele O'Marah.
