Comment by AB: Always an exceptionally festive event (even though there's only been 2 of 'em-- but I've made it to both and hereby so testify). For you travel trailer connoisseurs, the event headquarters is a vintage Airstream parked out front. Plus this hot flash-- according the the official Hunters Point grapevine, Honorable Mayor Gavin Newsom showed up and whipped the dealie bob into a tizzy. One thing I love about the Hunters Point artists is that they understand strength-in-numbers, they work together, throw shows like this, and... you guessed it... sell art.

Electric Works : Eclectic Works - New Releases and Then Some.

Review by Jennifer Jeffrey: There is eye candy galore at Electric Works tonight. The foyer is lined with pieces from local artist and Chronicle comic strip creator Paul Madonna. There's lots of good stuff inside the main room too, including a huge piece by Josephine Taylor, sculptures by Scott Kildall and Victoria Scott, and a twisted map by Lordy Rodriguez that imagines Disney as its own state. I particularly like the wall of affordable Tiny Art, small pieces that range from postcard size to slightly bigger, by a number of different artists; they can be purchased individually for $40 each or as a set.

Comment by AB: A little bit of everything here. Pencil sculptures, paintings, drawings, limited edition prints, and my favorite-- amusing paper sculptures by Scott Kildall and Victoria Scott including a Maltese Falcon, a Trojan Horse, a Yellow Submarine, and a Greek urn. Affordable too-- most pieces priced between $500-$1000. Perfect stocking stuffers.

Fort Mason Center : Fort Mason Printmakers Annual Print Sale.

Review and images by Jennifer Jeffrey: I bundle up and head over to Fort Mason on this cold December night, where I follow the paper signs to two narrow rooms where folding tables hold stacks of prints by the Printmaking Department of the San Francisco City College School of Art. People stand elbow-to-elbow sifting through the prints, which range from $10 to about $85 or so. Some of them are so-so, some are good, and a few are spectacular. The place has the fun, upbeat feel of a garage sale as people hunt for treasures, and a few lucky ducks will probably find a pretty picture beneath the tree this year.

Comment by AB: Postcard-size art from loads of local artists ranges in price from $1-$30. It's not just postcards though-- it can be anything; the only requirement is that whatever it is, it's about the size of a postcard. Options include fashion, jewelry, sculpture, prints, drawings, and of course, postcards.

Comment by AB: It's art about dreaming-- either dreaming of a better world, or dreaming naively on, like we can actually do something about life on this planet. I prefer the former. Anyway, the Mission 17 annual juried show consistently manages to ferret out some pretty respectable new talent.

Review and images by Jennifer Jeffrey: The many temptations of BellJar become even more irresistible tonight as the 16th-Street boutique hosts local jewelry designers Kitten Hawk, Magnetic Honey, Canopy and Talisman. Sparkling wine flows as the designers arrange their glittery bits on the table, and it suddenly feels like The Holidays. If you're looking for a piece of jewelry that doesn't scream department store, this is a great place to find it.

Comment by AB: "Cutting-edge contemporary art by sixteen critically acclaimed artists from Vietnam, Korea and their respective diasporas in the United States." Themes include repercussions of the Cold War, the impact of rapid modernization, and influence of the military. It's not all serious though. There's everything from art that makes you think and reflect to art that's pure upbeat entertainment. And quite a bit more video work than you might expect. A window into a different culture and definitely worth a visit.
