San Francisco Art Institute : Jill Magid - The Proposal
Comment by AB: Jill Magid continues her ongoing engagement with famed Mexican architect Luis Barrag?n's (1902-1988) life, career, estate and archives. Her proposal involves creating a lab-grown diamond from Barrag?n's ashes and trading it to a Swiss corporation in exchange for a portion of the architect's archives which the company currently owns, the idea being that they be returned to Mexico. The installation consists of a large brilliantly colored mandala, various documents and papers, a video, and of course, the diamond.

Gallery 16 : Michelle Grabner - Grabner Gingham
Comment by AB: The stars of the show are Michelle Grabner's gingham renditions, rigorous checkered impasto paintings on burlap. But there's plenty more to see as well including thickly gessoed and painted carpet samples, intricate dot compositions and circular graphite drawings that radiate out from their centers. Good show; go see.

Comment by AB: The explanatory for the show talks all about the significance and process involved in creating these large reductive gray-scale paintings. But try as you might, you can't escape the suggestive nature of the imagery. I call it intestinal abstraction.

Comment by AB: Beautifully produced small metal sculptures by Stefanie Victor look almost like jewelry. Complementing her work, small preserved and hand-painted moths by Christopher Garrett are mounted along the walls.
