Catharine Clark Gallery : Timothy Cummings - Cloverleaf; Andy Diaz Hope & Jon Bernson - Beautification Machine.

Comment by AB: Timothy Cummings paints up an anomalous reality populated with extraordinary characters, often androgynous, whose piercing stares will surely have you wondering whether perhaps you left your zipper open or something else about you isn't quite right. So is it you or is it them? You'll likely find yourself cogitating on that. Definitely worth seeing. In the media room, Andy Diaz Hope & Jon Bernson create an immersive environment where light and video are projected around and about viewers in ever changing ways.

Jack Fischer Gallery : John Hundt & Rachel Phillips.

Review by RWM: Interesting to see the "old photographs" with modern markings by Rachel Phillips. She adds dark forms to portraits of old. Time has moved on, but her modern additions really alter the images. Fun show for those who seek the unexpected and an encounter with change. The olden days are not fully remembered as static as time has since left it's mark.

John Hundt's pictures will have you thinking of surrealism. Interesting symbols and connections. These archetypally crowded works have one captivated, requiring close examination and some thought. Not clear what it all means, but a lot of room for associations and ruminations of the mind.

Vorres Gallery : Modern Mastery - Original works by Muldoon Elder.

Comment by AB: Survey of work by Muldoon Elder, artist, Vorpal Gallery owner and one of the higher profile San Francisco art world personalities of the 1960s and 70s. Also on exhibit are works of art by artists whose work he represented when he owned Vorpal Gallery.

Alter Space : Modern Mastery - Original works by Muldoon Elder.

Artists: Jeff Ray, Reenie Charrière, Gene A. Felice II, Mary Franck, Kadet Kuhne, Jean Tarantino, Re*Colectivo, Shane Myrbeck, Emily Shisko, Merav Tzur, Taser Island.

Review and images c/o Carrie Katz: Alter Space hosts "Water World," an exhibition of sound works as part of the biennial Soundwave Festival. The crowd is plentiful, unsurprising since Soundwave is such a beloved San Francisco event. T-shirt sales detract from the integrity of the show; sound art requires patience, focus, and usually illicits a bit of a reverent atmosphere from the faithful audience that resonates with the genre, so the sideshow t-shirt stand with talkative solicitous salespeople selling their wares seemed out of place.

Jeff Ray's "Ark and Surroundings," and his accompanying performance anchor the exhibition (no pun intended). Many artists make interesting interpretations of the water theme, such as "Surface Tension" (by Shane Myrbeck and Emily Shisko) where a circle of speakers surrounds a handful of chairs in the dungeon-esque basement of the gallery. The piece is "based on a central metaphor-- the behavior of water when an object is dropped into it." All in all a rich exhibition well worth visiting on a day when a sparser crowd will allow for more careful listening.
