Museum of Performance + Design : Grand Reopening - Portrait of the Cuban School of Ballet by Rebekah Bowman.

Comment by AB: Headlining this event are Cuban National Ballet School photographs taken by Rebekah Bowman during her visits there in 2012 and 2013. Aside from the quality of the work and the sensitivity and respect with which the institution is portrayed, just getting permission to take these photographs is notable in and of itself. In this era of slowly thawing relations between Cuba and the US, this show brings us just a little bit closer together with our neighbor to the south. Also on the docket is a documentary video by Cuban cinematographer Roberto Chile with an exclusive interview with Prima Ballerina Alicia Alonso, Cuban ballet memorabilia, set designs, and more.

Christian Daniels Gallery : Plein Air - Capturing Nature's Light.

Artists: Yen-Ching Chang, Doohong Min, Jacob Dhein, James Kroner, Hsin-Yao Tsang, Melissa Yarbrough, Richard Lindenberg, Arlene Fisher Hann.

Comment by AB: Artists take their easels outdoors, paint what they see as they're seeing it, and here's the upshot of that.

Museum of Craft and Design : Good Design - Stories from Herman Miller; Holly Lane - Carving Allegories.

Comment by AB: Holly Lane's paintings embedded into wood constructions are literally altars of art. They range in style from high gothic to proportionally amusing. Also on exhibit are gilded assemblages, the best of which tower skyward like lavishly extravagant trophies. Showing concurrently with Holly Lane is a survey of furnishings and decorative effects by Herman Miller, largely considered to be the most influential American furniture and design company of the twentieth century. The Museum of Craft and Design recently reopened in these spacious new digs along the burgeoning Third Street corridor. Be sure to stop by for a visit.

The Performance Art Institute : Tobias Tovera - Transmutation.

Comment by AB: The Performance Art Institute miraculously redeems itself from its previous debacle by completely whipping it's expansive gallery space into shape and mounting a most respectable show of Tobias Tovera's combination pigment/mineral/chemical abstractions. Worth a look... but call ahead first.

The Popular Workshop : Schrödinger's Cats.

Artists: Andrew Chapman, Aaron Finnis, Dana Hemenway, Christopher Füllemann, and Ginger Wolfe-Suarez, Primitivo Suarez-Wolfe. Curated by Aaron Harbour and Jackie Im.

Comment by AB: Here's the premise-- "Erwin Schrödinger described how one could, in principle, transpose quantum indeterminacy and superposition into large-scale systems. He proposed a scenario with a cat in a sealed box, wherein the cat's life or death becomes dependent on the state of an unobserved subatomic particle. According to Schrödinger's thought experiment, the cat remains both alive and dead (to the universe outside the box) until the box is opened and an observation is made." OK. I think I get it except for the subatomic particle part... I think. But I'm bettin' the cat's dead 'cuz if it's in a sealed box, then it's gonna run out of air, right? Who would do that to a cat anyway? As for the Schrödinger-inspired art on display, I'm lovin' some of it, but certain other works leave a little to be desired. Stop on by.
