Stephen Wirtz Gallery : Griff Williams - nothing exists in itself; Laurie Reed - Project: Crushed Glass.

Comment by AB: According to the spec sheet, Griff Williams combines Darwinian references, paint-by-numbers colors, Rorschach mirror imagery, turn of the century postcard views, and degrees of abstraction into wondrous expansive majestic landscapes. They seem to have an environmental component to boot, enhancing their allure. Like 'em. In the parlour, Laurie Reed applies threadlike meanderings of adhesives onto paper and then frosts 'em with finely ground glass and then the concoction dries and then I don't know. What I do know is this-- anything looks good in an art gallery.

GLBT Historial Society : Dykes on Bikes - 30 Years at the Forefront.

Comment by AB: Thirty-year retrospective of Dykes on Bikes, famed for fronting the Pride Parade almost since its inception. The look back includes T-shirts, photographs, literature, a timeline, and other memorabilia. Those of you who care to upgrade the experience can sit astride a gen-u-ine Triumph motorcycle.

John Pence Gallery : Edward Minoff.

Comment by AB: Edward Minoff paints it all-- landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes, portraits, still lifes, and I suspect if there's something you want painted that you don't see here, he'll probably paint it for you.

Silverman Gallery : Starship (Hans-Christian Dany, Martin Ebner, Ariane M?ller) - Written on Spiders.

Comment by AB: Proprietor Jessica Silverman tells me Starship, based out of Berlin, Germany, has been publishing a magazine (Starship) since 1998, a number of issues of which are available for purchase at the gallery. Starship's show includes limited edition posters ($25 each or all 19 for $400), installation, video, a DVD, painting, drawing, found objects, and more. Worth a look.

Lincart Gallery : Tucker Nichols.

Review by Libby Nicholaou: In talking with Tucker Nichols, I find that he likes architectural elements, records text from signs in everyday life, likes to work with confined spaces, and most importantly, has fun with his artistic creations. ?The paintings for this exhibit are mostly comprised of text and abstract line variations that allude to everyday forms. ?There are two compilations of small framed paintings, arranged in a grid, making a larger composition out of many small ones. ?

The idea, for the bottle labeled "Dang," used as the poster for the show, came to Tucker from the many bottles formerly filled with paint lying around his studio. When looking at his work you might first think "Dang" is the beginning of a longer word, such as dangerous, since his paintings split or cut?words?unconventional locations. ?"Dang" for this poster is a statement and an invention, just as all other pieces in the exhibit. ?Tucker also has a show in New York right now curated by Dave Eggers-- understandable considering his inventive rudimentary style.

Comment by AB: As is his wont, Tucker Nichols peppers Lincart with a gratifying array of uncomplicated drawings and wry distilled witticisms. With Nichols, it's not so much about isolating individual works as it is about grasping the essence of their origination-- sort of a journey vs way station kinda deal. And thanks to Gail Tarantino for her expository in this regard.

Adobe Books Backroom Gallery : Rainen Knecht & Christopher Baird - The Optimistic.

Comment by AB: I'm not sure whose art is whose, but it's both good. My prefs? Four variations on an abstract composition by one artist, and a mystifying catcher's mitt with caught fish by the other. Stop on by and have a look. I expect we'll be seeing more from these two.
