111 Minna Gallery : Celebrity Trash - Jason Mecier; Internal-Eternal - Bedelgeuse

Comment by AB: Jason Mecier has the unique skill of transforming even the most useless throwaways and pieces of trash into outrageous over-the-top celebrity portraits. In the side gallery, Bedelgeuse conjures up inconceivably imaginative visions in collage. Worth a visit on both counts.

Comment by AB: Annual group show of the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center (APICC) in conjunction with the 19th annual United States of Asian America Festival 2016 titled Civil Dis(place)ment. While I entirely understand the history of the space and always appreciate the social and political significance of the art shows here (and learn a great deal from them as well), these last several exhibitions have been rather light on the art part. While they're consistently satisfying in social and political terms, we can't forget that SOMArts is an art space and these are art exhibitions. In other words, the art should not be relegated to the status of accessory to the message.
