Mark Wolfe Contemporary Art : Jeremy Mora - In Memoriam.

Review by RWM: Odd juxtaposition of materials turning pop art items into sculptures that suggest narratives. The main ingredient of a good number of pieces looks like it might be styrofoam or rock or concrete. Viewers will likely get lost in the details presented upon and around it.

Comment by AB: Bewildering agglomerates by Jeremy Mora defy explanation, or perhaps invite your mind to run wild (or maybe amok).

Romer Young Gallery : Christoph Roßner - The Hat, That Never Existed.

Comment by AB: Expressive dream-state apparitions by German artist Christoph Roßner vacillate between representation and abstraction. Context is minimal, so it's pretty much up to the viewer when it comes to extrapolating possible outcomes.

Z Space Gallery at Project Artaud : Artwork by Victor Cartagena.

Comment by AB: Victor Cartagena's show consists of two bodies of work. The large mural installation (in progress), a play on words, equates bureaucrats with burros, and when complete, will incorporate kinetic elements. He tells me that once completed, it will travel to Cuba. The individual works on paper are from a series entitled Anatomy of la Mentira, which has to do with lying and why we must lie.

The Popular Workshop : Hunter Longe - Degausser.

Comment by AB: The Popular Workshop has taken over the space formerly occupied by Gallery 1988 on Sutter Street. Tonight's inaugural opening exhibition features a commendably impressive multimedia installation by Hunter Longe titled Degausser. "Degaussing" is defined as the magnetic erasing of data. In addition to being created and destroyed by processes involving magnetic fields, data can also be manipulated, distorted, and otherwise altered or obscured. When you add it all up, Longe gets us thinking about the oceans of information we're constantly bombarded with and about exactly how much of it is really as true or as accurate as it's positioned as being. Nicely done and worth a visit. I'd keep an eye on this dude...

Gamma Photo Lab : The Landscape Below...the Landscape Above - Jurij Strutynsky.

Review by RWM: Get lost in the wide horizons or beneath the earth. Underground can be as wild as the skies, though not as splendiferous as the wonders above. You can see here the scenery of some of our national parks captured in their grand wonder, the black and white images offering a sense and longing for history. Tough times below the ground though.
