George Lawson Gallery : Ward Schumaker - Fashion and Logic; Susan Mikula - American Device.

Comment by AB: In the main gallery, Susan Mikula's haunting indeterminate yellow green landscape photographs are, in actuality, views of the Port of Long Beach, and waterfront industrial scenes along the Gulf of Mexico between New Orleans and Galveston, all shot with a vintage Polaroid SX-70 camera and expired film. Pretty spiffy stuff-- kind of like a toxic pall has settled over America (which probably isn't that far from the truth). Hopefully, Mikula has enough expired film to continue this current thread of work for a while. In the side gallery, enjoy small-format classic abstractions and text works by Ward Schumaker.

For those of you keeping score at home, Susan Mikula's partner, MSNBC political commentator Rachel Maddow (whose show I quite enjoy), is here at the gallery tonight for the opening reception, and let me tell you, she couldn't be nicer. I ask if I can take her picture and it's like, "Sure-- let's go into the front room; it's got better light..." Yo!

CELLspace : Kristin Smith - Bodies of Thought.

Review by RWM: Fascinating dynamic photo works with movement and almost psychedelic feel. You can see the thoughts as well as the people in motion. The images inspire with their vitality.
