Canessa Gallery : John Mattos - A Show of 52 New Prints.

Comment: Artist and graphic designer John Mattos conjures up a kicky deck of playing cards that appears traditional at first glance, but then you start to notice the departures. Highlights include a king who's trying to get toast out of a toaster with a fork, a queen without a face looking at her face in a mirror, a jack on a cell phone, and more. I don't know whether you can actually play cards with them, especially gamble, 'cuz there's no way you can keep a straight face. Signed limited edition prints of the cards are $195 or you can buy the actual deck for only $15. Sales appear brisk.

Pasquale Iannetti Art Galleries : Maximilien Luce - The Calm of Nature and Gentleness of Things; A Selection of Oil Paintings.

Comment: Respectable show of landscape and figure paintings by this significant French neo-impressionist born in 1858. Prices range $40K-$125K. You don't often see this much of this kind of art all at once in SF, so if it's your cup of tea, now would be a good time to sip.

Lost Art Salon : Alexandra Docili - Paintings and Drawings, 1965-67.

Comment: San Francisco artist Alexandra Docili's drawings fuse aspects of macrobiology, microbiology, and anatomy into airy fantasy abstracts. Always an upbeat occasion here at Lost Art Salon, tonight's fare additionally incorporating wall-to-wall art by a variety of artists, gourmet licorice tasting, live tunes, and a peppy vodka concoction, all in an easy conversational setting.

California Modern Art Gallery : Barry Mann and Susan Berkowitz - Uncovering the Essence.

Comment: Barry Mann photographs textured multicolor surfaces up close like walls or fences, then prints 'em up big, effectively rendering them abstract. Competently and appealingly done. He also zooms in on plants, distilling out their artistic essence. Susan Berkowitz's grainy unanticipated object combinations work too with their antique attributes. For you youngsters, Barry Mann is one of America's most successful and prolific songwriters, beginning his career in the late 1950's, meeting and marrying co-writer Cynthia Weil in the early 1960's, then came dozens of awards and distinctions including multiple Grammys, and they're still going strong today. (Check out their website and see.) For a talent of his stature and accomplishments, Mann could not have been more delightful to speak with. And everybody lived happily ever after.

Ar+Space Gallery : Beryl Fine Photography.

Comment: Beryl Fine tells me her gritty streetstyle portraiture is intended to remind us that nobody gets left out and that everybody has merit. She hangs the show on flattened cardboard boxes, a fundamental element of homeless living.

Comment: Oceans of local artists ply their trade right before our eyes and then instantly donate the results to Southern Exposure. Southern Exposure in turn prices 'em at $50 each, no exceptions, and the trampling begins-- civilized trampling, that is. Such a deal! The Monster Drawing Rally has inexorably ascended to legendary status within its brief 7 year stint, ratcheting itself into one of San Francisco's premier be-there art events. Since So-Ex is currently undergoing an earthquake retrofit, it's off the the Verdi Club (Mariposa near Potrero) for the 2007 installment. Surprise-- I like the venue even more than So-Ex as it enhances the social component with its congenial vintage atmosphere (especially the lounge).

Space Gallery : Collector.

Comment: Collector and publisher of Bomb Magazine, David Paul, shares over 350 vintage hip-hop album covers, CD booklets, 12 inch covers, photographs (by Timi D. Paul), and related musicabilia in this one-night spectacle. Plus the dj's are primo, there's continuous vintage hip-hop video and film footage, and so on and so forth ad infinitum. (I miss those album days... except for the sound quality; it was like everytime you bought an album, you got a free work of art to go with it.) Excellent show.

Comment: Frankee Uno's a hair salon that puts on some pretty decent art shows. This time around, it's abstract drawings and witty videos by Peter Foucault.
