Ratio 3 Gallery : Takeshi Murata - 1000 Years

Comment by AB: Enigmatic digital images of isolated objects against featureless backgrounds are nevertheless rich enough to suggest broader narratives. In the side gallery, a digitally animated American flag can't seem to decide whether to immolate itself or illuminate the darkness like a neon marquis. Good show; go see.

Capital Gallery : Gypsy Wagon - Justin Adian and Wendy White

Comment by AB: Capital Gallery opens at it's new location in The Mission, the former world headquarters of Hamburger Eyes. For their inaugural show, Wendy White essays on country lifestyle via the universal language of bluejeans, Marlboros and Bud while Justin Adian creates sculptural pairings with stretched enamel-coated canvases over foam. Works by other gallery artists are also on display. Worth a visit.

Jack Fischer Gallery : Kyong Ae Kim & Stephanie Metz - against the grain

Comment by AB: Amorphic felt sculptures by Stephanie Metz might be plant and they might be animal. Kyong Ae Kim cuts and layers sheets of translucent mylar to create depth and dimensional effects. Nicely done on both counts. Check 'em out.

Ever Gold [Projects] : Kazuo Shiraga & Kour Pour - Earthquakes And The Mid Winter Burning Sun

Comment by AB: Vibrant oversized block prints on canvas by Kour Pour contrast with vintage expressionist abstracts by Kazuo Shiraga, member of the Gutai collective (1955) and co-founder of Zero Society (1952). Go see.

Anglim Gilbert Gallery : Rigo 23 - Autonomous InterGalactic Space Program

Comment by AB: More than an art show, this is an experience, a construction that fills the entire gallery. You literally walk through a conceptual universe of beliefs, principles and resistance. Artists and artisans of Chiapas, Mexico envision a better future for us all and what it might take to get us there, outer space that is.
