Comment by AB: The second annual installment of this estimable fair blends the best in design with the finest in art, with participation by top international galleries and a roster of hand-picked exhibitors. This is definitely not one of those fairs where anybody who applies gets in. Works by major artists and designers from the mid-20th century to the present are the order of the day, from furnishings, ceramics and jewelry to tapestries, lighting and art. This is one of those confluences of objects where practically every single piece in the show has either a famous name or historical significance attached to it (and often both).

On the way in, the lines of cars waiting for valet parking look like The Bay Bridge during Friday rush hour, and once you finally gain entry to tonight's Preview Gala benefiting SFMOMA here at Fort Mason's Festival Pavilion, the place is absolutely packed. Fortunately, the floor plan and booths are spacious, and there's plenty of room to appreciate everything. My personal faves include superb ceramics everywhere, David Zwirner and Pace (just for being there, but they've got plenty of exceptional art to show as well), an impeccable Teresita Fernández installation at Anthony Meier, artist jewelry at nexxt20 (in spite of giving me a hard time about photographing it), Friedman Benda for most outrageous booth (by far), and Converso (crammed with mid-century modern classics). The fair lasts through Sunday and in addition to the exhibition includes presentations, panel discussions, screenings and more. Check the FOG Design + Art website for a complete list of happenings and events. Absolutely positively worth going.
