Gallery Paule Anglim : James Drake - War in Heaven.
Comment: The huge (10' high) figurative charcoal drawings by James Drake are overwhelming. They look like black and white murals in their monumental size. The central work in the show is an allegorical story of "War in Heaven". A bunch of horrible and hostile animals frighten a pair of deer in the momentum of their escape, leaving behind a home setting of a peaceful dinner table with candles ready for a meal.
The rest of the gallery walls are covered by huge portraits on torn joined paper. The paper is covered with patches of textured yellowish tape. The size of the works is reminiscent of old Soviet posters while their subject is personal and even emotional. The references to history are indicated by the titles of the works, referring to specific historical events like World War II or Vietnam.

111 Minna Gallery : Kelly Tunstall and Ferris Plock - Sinners and Saints.
Comment: This is a real collaboration. When entering the 111 Minna club/gallery/bar, it is hard to tell that the works on the walls were actually painted by two different artists. Only when looking at them more closely is there a difference between the black contoured images of Ferris Plock illustrating sinful male creatures and the light feminine saints of Kelly Tunstall. The most elaborate pieces in the show are a couple of larger square collaborative paintings. The cartoon characters are all mixed up, both good and the evil, in a sense comprising a cute and funny drama of Dante's Hell.

Bucheon Gallery : Augustin Pozo Galvez - No Time For Pretty.
Comment: "No Time for Pretty" is a beautiful show. Compared to his earlier work, these Galvez paintings are more restrained in color. While making this work he thought about "where the country has been going politically lately" and was "terribly disturbed by the war." The current work is more grayish and reflective, holding back on color and imagery. Galvez's compositions are not limited to the surfaces of his paintings. He creates a variety of different sized and shaped canvases, some accented and/or connected together by thin wooden stripes, some grouped together, others hanging separately. These combinations result in rich irregular works, all painted in subtle abstractions.
