San Francisco Art Openings: Subterranean Shoe Room Gallery

SUBTERRANEAN SHOE ROOM:
DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH; NOTHING NEW FROM BRIAN EWING
OPENING 04.23.04

Comment: Subterranean Shoe Room, haberdashery of high hipness, hosts the first solo show of poster artist Brian Ewing. Sixties posters invoked visions of peace, love, and psychotropism; Ewing's invoke lust, excess, high risk, and sacrilege. Practically vibrating off the walls, they espouse various lifestyle choices including duck and cover, stand and fight, drink and barf, get a tattoo, worship the devil, pierce something, drop trou' and/or tu-tu. For you anthropologist mathematicians, I calculate a venue's hipness index as follows: First, I stand in the venue; second, I measure the degree to which I feel like a complete dork; third, the value of that degree is directly proportional to the venue's hipness index. As you may have guessed, I felt reasonably dorky at this one, but hardly anyone noticed; they were too busy having fun, as was I.
