INTERNATIONAL DIRECTORY OF ARTS; TWO FROM ARTPRICE.COM

Posted June 6, 2001.

International Directory of Arts

The 25th Edition of the International Directory of Arts, 2000/2001 is a 2,340 page three-volume set containing contact information for nearly 130,000 international art museums, art and antique dealers, public galleries, universities and art associations, auctioneers, restorers, art publishers, art periodicals, art book dealers, and more. Every entry contains data including institution or business names, addresses, phone and fax numbers, emails, websites, information about specialties, and names of owners, directors, or curators. The International Directory of Arts, 2000/2001 is a great almanac and guide to the art world.

Each volume in the set is organized in chapter-by-chapter format-- one chapter for museums, one chapter for dealers, and so on. Within each chapter, addresses are arranged alphabetically by country, alphabetically within each country section, and alphabetically according to city. All listings are in the native language of the country.

To give you an idea of how comprehensive this directory is and how the publisher strives to update each new edition, the 25th edition contains 6,500 museums and 8,000 art dealers that are being listed for the first time. These new listings are in addition to the thousands of dealer and museum listings carried over from the previous edition. For curators, travelers, librarians, academics, lecturers at art schools, students, journalists, art and antique dealers, auctioneers, book dealers, and anyone else involved in art either professionally or as a pastime, the International Directory of Arts, 2000/2001 is your indispensable tool for navigating the art world.

For those of you who aren't interested in buying your own personal copy, make sure that you have access to the directory through your local library. It's also available in CD-ROM format.

Artprice Indicator 2001

Artprice Indicator 2001 , published by artprice.com, is the most affordable quick-fix art price reference available on the market today. For only $19.95, you get brief biographical data and over 100,000 auction sales results for 50,000 artists of all time periods and nationalities. The book is pocket-sized and easy to take along for those of you who like to beat the backwater bushes for long-lost masterworks.

A word of caution: Never use price guides or abbreviated auction price references such as Artprice Indicator 2001 to appraise or value individual works of art. They are good for approximating prices in pressure situations, but not good for making final determinations as to what works of art are worth on the open market. For example, if you find a painting in an antique shop priced at $200 and find three listings for the artist in the Artprice Indicator 2001 , all in the $2,000-$3,000 range, the painting could well be a bargain. On the other hand, if you're researching a specific Picasso print, the Artprice Indicator 2001 lists only one auction record for one lithograph when, in fact, thousands of Picasso prints have been auctioned in the past decade.

Art Price Annual & Falk's Art Price Index, 2001

Art Price Annual & Falk's Art Price Index, 2001 , published by artprice.com contains 170,000 price records for paintings, drawings, prints, tapestries, sculptures, animation art, and photographs by 59,000 artists that sold at 5,200 international art auctions during the year 2000. Each entry includes information like the work of art's title, artist, artist's birth and death dates, medium, size, sale date, sale location, auctioneer, whether the piece is reproduced in the sale catalogue, signature information, signature location, and catalogue raisonne information. Price information includes pre-sale estimates in the currency of the country conducting the sale, and selling price in Dollars, Euros, Francs, Pounds, and the currency of the country conducting the sale.

Art Price Annual & Falk's Art Price Index, 2001 is one of the most comprehensive annual auction record compendiums available today. In addition to art prices, it contains lists of top 100 performers in various areas of the art market, graphs showing trends in the art market in 2000, and details about the artprice.com organization.

This year's edition is somewhat unique in that not only does it have reference value, but it's also being advertised and sold as a work of art in and of itself. French artist, Ben Vautier, has designed the front cover, and each copy is individually numbered as one of a total edition of 10,000. Whether this distinction ultimately elevates the publication to an investment-grade collectible, or relegates it to becoming just another doorstop once its information is no longer up-to-date, remains to be seen.

artprice.com auction records are also available in CD-ROM and online database formats.
