San Francisco Art Openings: Meyerovich Gallery

MEYEROVICH GALLERY
COVER STORIES: NEW YORKER MAGAZINE COVERS
OPENING 03.09.04

Comment: A survey show of famous New Yorker Magazine covers from 1930 to the present. The New Yorker may be about New York, published by New Yorkers for New Yorkers, but its covers reflect life in all of big city America, from the highest highs to the lowest lows, as witnessed by Art Spiegelman's heart-stopping black-on-black cover for the 9/11 special issue. Now for the weird part: Not one piece in the show is original-- every one is a repro, and not even a good repro. An art show without art; only reproductions of magazine covers which are themselves reproductions in the first place. A handful of these repro repros are available for sale, done in limited editions of 500, signed by their artists, for $550 a piece. Yawn.
