Comment: Portraits of Jazz artists by Ian Johnson, straight-on stuff for the most part, some a little rough, particularly the pencil and ink drawings. The acrylics on wood and skateboard decks rescue the show and take it up a notch. Prices are reasonable, topping out at $800. Future Primitive shows invariably rank high on the hipometer, usually around 8.0-- enough to cause significant damage, but not total destruction. The price list/statement sheet describes Johnson as "internationally renowned." Them kinda words conjure visions of Warhol, Einstein, Ghandi, Elvis, and Ryan Seacrest. Or maybe we're talkin' tongue-in-cheek. Whatever the case, Johnson's not quite there yet, but he's got plenty of time.
