Comment: Far too many artists have little or no means of getting their work out in front of their adoring fans, especially artists who make street/urban/alternative art. So you've seen these farmers markets, right? The ones where you have to take out a second mortgage on the house just to buy a tomato the size of a BB? How about some kind of market like that for alternative artists? Well, START SOMA founder John Doffing says, "I can do that." Not only does he do it, but he throws in musicians, performers, a fashion show, and a whole lot more, and turns the whole shish kabob into a fundraiser for the San Francisco Late Night Coalition.

Dozens of artists participated in the event, completely filling a vacant garage space directly below the main music and performance area. All had art for sale, and many were making it live, right before your eyes. I haven't seen anything quite like it, and it's a concept that could possibly work well on a larger scale. I'm not sure how may of the participants are awake during normal business hours, but move this thing to a decent venue, hold it over a weekend, get some advance press, keep everything pretty much the same as it was here, and I think that not only will the artists make some decent cash, but people in the Bay Area will discover the scope and depth of our talented alternative arts community.
