Comment: The best show I've seen at Pro Arts, however I must qualify that by saying I haven't seen that many Pro Arts shows, but it's still good by any standards, and worth a visit. It has that Rene de Guzman ethos, explained by the fact that he's the sole juror, a juried exhibit with one juror tending to show one taste in art. Of note are three extraterrestrial pieces by D. Koons that inexplicably capture the feel of being on another planet, however I must qualify that by saying I've never been on another planet. Prices are all over the place, so if you're there as a buyer, you really have to know your product. In the "good value" category are several abstracted city scenes with meticulous detail on translucent plastic ($425 each, with apologies-- I forgot the name of the artist). They're right next to four small desertscapes on wood at an ouchy $2000 each.

Some pieces aren't for sale. So I'm thinking why enter a relatively high-profile show, a solid opportunity to strut your mettle, but not price your work? You could be one of those uncommon artists who keeps all their art, or who only gives it away to friends, which is fine. But if you're looking for a show, a rep, a dealer, a buyer, or any other currency-generating circumstance, you've got to price your stuff. Not pricing places an effective hurdle in the way of any transaction that is ultimately to take place.
