San Francisco Art Openings: Supervisor Matt Gonzalez

SUPERVISOR MATT GONZALEZ; SAN FRANCISCO CITY HALL
WILL YACKULIC; V.S.O.P./A.S.A.P.
OPENING 07.02.04

Comment: Gonzalez goes young this time around with Will Yackulic, an artist of promise whose art seems to emanate an indefinable significance, even though much of it is small and repetitive. Some of it is words, some is shapes, some is shapes that form themselves into words, all very basic. Either way, the art works; it holds your attention, at times bordering on the hypnotic. And special added bonus-- it gives Yackulic plenty of practice painting small, detailed, accurate, and error-free. Yackulic calls himself a funny Sol Lewitt which could mean that Sol Lewitt's not that funny, but regardless of how funny Sol Lewitt is or isn't, when Yackulic talks about his art, you get the feeling that there's some sort of plan kicking around in there. He actually used the word "emotion" when referring to his art and that's a descriptive you don't hear every day. The good news for you speculators is that the buy-in is cheap cheap cheap, his most expensive painting priced at $200. And business is brisk. As they say on The Street, I'm rating this guy a strong buy.
