San Francisco Art Openings: Adobe Bookstore Book Store

ADOBE BOOKSHOP: GROUP SHOW
OPENING 09.25.04

Comment: A respectable show this time around, particularly the photographs in the Backroom Gallery. As usual, the art in the main room is tough to see (you basically have to look straight up), but it works at a distance, and probably does at close range too. The crowd was pretty quiet, not typical for an Adobe show, perhaps due to the meditative background music. Then the live music started and the place got even quieter. So I tip-toed around, took a few pics, and scurried off to the Mission Arts & Performance Project-- 415.826.2402 or email sfmap@hotmail.com -- music/performance/art events in several garages, and at the Red Poppy Art House (all between 22nd-24th-Folsom-South Van Ness).

Getting back to Adobe for a moment, prices were reasonable except for one artist's paintings which ran $3500-$5000, over five times more than the next nearest contender, which brings us to Art Tip #4852: When exhibiting at a location where people hesitate to spend ten bucks for a book and/or where the other art in the show costs far less than yours-- assuming, of course, you prefer selling art to not selling art-- play to the customer base, and not to what your art may or may not sell for under different circumstances. If your large pieces are too expensive, show smaller ones. At the very least, you want people to remember your art first and your prices later, not the other way around.

ps... Love the skullphones in the front window.
