RayKo Photo Center Main Gallery : The Last Kodachrome.

Review by Clare Coppel: This Rayko Photo Center exhibit features photographs created using Kodachrome, that iconic film no longer being made or processed by Kodak. Included in the show are images of cigarettes, bikinis, retro hairstyles, trees, life in bygone eras, sunglasses, Vietnam and dreamy landscapes. Also portraits of photographers using cameras no one knows how to use anymore.

Review by RWM: So long to the Kodachrome. It is a sad goodbye, a sweet sorrow, but things are not always permanent. Great colors and unusual subjects enliven this farewell show.

Fivepoints Arthouse : The Wandering Flood Moves Through Us.

Review by Brian Bonham: The Wandering Flood Moves Through Us, a group show featuring artists Michael Louis Young, James Seevers, and Chris Russell will be running from December 17th through January 29th at the Fivepoints Arthouse.

Initially disquieting, the exhibit comes together as a whole. One can appreciate the micro and macro of time and space presented in such pieces as James Seevers's The Void That Was, where he depicts the framework of the neuro pathways, which could be interpreted as a metaphor of the shapes and patterns of the universe.

Chris Russell's work is the most accessible. For example, Green Think nicely captures the essence of sunlight setting/rising through a forest. His pieces present themselves as those experience and acts as a bridge between the spectator and the work. On the other side of the coin, Michael Louis Young's art presents as intellectually challenging. The method of using phrases on first glance might be considered high-handed, but after viewing the works several times I come to appreciate the puzzle posed by questions such as the piece, You are Ugly and Will Never Grow Up Because of it. The three artists' works complement one another nicely, and though cryptic at times, it is well worth checking out. The crowd is small for a rainy night, yet in true San Francisco fashion, are dressed to impress-- SOMA chic meets casting call for an Indie film. Well worth the effort.

Comment by AB: Mystic mix of landscape, abstraction, nature, man, cognition and cosmic in this nicely consolidated and curated show.

Last Gasp Books : Burritos, Beer & Cheer 2010.

Comment by AB: Yet another prodigious episode of Ron Turner's Last Gasp Christmas hoedown, thick with counterculture creatives, characters and luminaries... and a fine time is had by all. The event is also a fundraiser for St. Martin De Porres soup kitchen, this year raising over $7000 for the cause.
