The McLoughlin Gallery : Sugar High - Ah-Young Jeon and Kristina Quinones.
Review by RWM: Who said too much sugar is bad for you? Wonderful art revels in use of pleasing palettes. The vivid color smorgasbords from Kristina Quinones-- sparkling acrylics-- would look great on surfboards. They look just as wild on the walls giving viewers a psychedelic experience. You can get lost in their wave actions and wild skies. Beautiful work that will put you in motion.
Ah-young Jeon uses great color schemes as well. All sorts of brilliant hues make her art look like candy. The humor might be unsettling, but it is intended to be good fun. Nice to see the pinks and pastels which may remind you of bumble gun and sweets.
Fun show from two artists who, despite the festiveness, take their art seriously. More attention to care and detail than is initially apparent.
Comment by AB: From streamlined high-gloss to jestful commentary, colorific on both counts. Works for me. Check it out.

Ever Gold Gallery : Jeremiah Jenkins - Survival Guide.
Comment by AB: According to the preamble, "fire, food, water, shelter and help are the five priorities in any survival situation." Jeremiah Jenkins provides amusing instruction and examples for how to have all of that and more, no matter how tricky a fix you find yourself in. Offerings include a shopping cart made out of sticks, twigs and rope; hollowed out gourds complete with labels for your beverages; pictorial instructions on how to hunt for steak or build a fire; a stylish transportable shelter and more. I like it. Worth a visit.

Jessica Silverman Gallery : Amikam Toren - Of The Times and Other Historic Works.
Comment by AB: For the inaugural show at Jessica Silverman's new Ellis Street location, Amikam Toren exhibits a series of ghostly oversized paintings dating from 1983-1993. Each is an abstracted representation of a letter in the alphabet, painted with pigment made from pulverized issues of London Times newspapers. They're tasty up close too where you can see their textures. Also on the docket are a number of painting/sculpture combinations made from cardboard boxes, created circa 1984 - 1995. To make them, Toren removed one side of each box, ground and mixed it with pigment, and then used the mixture to paint a canvas that he had stretched over the removed side of the box. Excellent show. Definitely recommended.

Review by RWM: Nice to see these two shows with the gallery in a less congested state. Interesting and pleasing art on display which might get viewers to see Nature in a different way. Beautiful artworks are available for viewing in many mediums, manners of form and shapes. Most is pleasing, but the ravages of time are also apparent.

Review by RWM: Strangeness abounds. There are some works of art here that you may never have seen before nor wish to see again. The huge crowd demonstrates the popularity and success of this weird and unpredictable show. Creativity and quirkiness are everywhere.
Comment by AB: Any Northern California artist can enter this annual fee-free juried exhibition. You never know what's gonna walk through the doors, but way more often than not, it's fresh, peppy, weird, whimsical and unexpected. Don't believe me? See for yourself...
