Harding Gallery : Grand Opening Reception - The Art of Julio Machado.

Comment by AB: Yet another new entry into San Francisco's ever expanding art-o-rama. For those of you keeping score, new galleries are currently opening at the rate of about 1-3 per month. The inaugural show here at Harding Gallery presents the peculiar paintings of Ecuadorian artist Julio Machado who, with exceptionally meticulous brushwork (or maybe knife work or maybe both), applies human lips to tropical birds.

Comment by AB: The theme of this catch-all juried show is masquerade, or interpreted more widely, various ways of concealing the truth. I suppose one might conjecture on how certain of these works could possibly be interpreted within the framework of that theme... or simply have a glass of wine and then move on to the next exciting adventure.

Comment by AB: The walls are filled with photocopy artworks from numerous artists. According to the official rules, you get to make one free copy any single item that you personally bring in, make two free copies of anything you bring in if you contribute one of those copies to the show, make a copy any one item on the walls for $1, keep any one "original" on the walls for $5 if you replace it with a copy, keep any one original on the walls for $10 if you do not replace it with a copy, or purchase the 10.22.38 Astoria book for $20. It's precisely that simple and no more complicated.

Paul Mahder Gallery : Yisrael Feldsott - The Early Works, 1974-1986.

Comment by AB: Yisrael Feldsott's period art ranges from raw earthy abstraction to primitive figural works to intense socio-political commentary. While speaking with Feldsott, he mentions that on several occasions years ago he completely destroyed large bodies of his work. I ask whether he regrets doing that now and without hesitation he answers, "Yes." For any of you artists out there who have ever or might ever think about doing something similar, consider this a cautionary tale. The last thing you want to do when looking back on the momentous events of your art career is to wonder what you could have possibly been thinking.
