Anthony Meier Fine Arts : Teresita Fernandez.

Comment by AB: Teresita Fernandez does amazing things with graphite. As far as she's concerned, it's not just for pencils anymore. Also marvel at her rather mesmerizing installation of miniature mirrored glass cubes.

871 Fine Arts : Emily McVarish - A Thousand Several.

Review by RWM: Going to work in the digital age here. Easy to get caught up in the numbers and binary code which dwarf the players.

Comment by AB: Experience graphics as fine art in Emily McVarish's series of exquisitely hand-set and hand-printed compositions that appear to mimic vintage data processing punch cards.

Museum of Craft and Folk Art : Volver - Mexican Folk Art Into Play.

Artists: Adrian Esparza, Máximo González, Armando Miguelez, Favianna Rodriguez, Eduardo Sarabia

Comment by AB: In celebration of Mexico's Bicentennial Anniversary of Independence, the Museum of Crafts and Folk Art offers up an engaging array of traditional Mexican crafts and folk art, except with surprising contemporary twists. Stop on by and prepare to be entertained.

Meridian Gallery Gallery : Darker, Ever Darker; Deeper, Always Deeper - The Voyage of Tim Whiten.

Review by RWM: Grand symbolic forms. Pop Art ethos becomes surreal and imbued with metaphorical meaning. Great use of coffee and juice which Tim Whiten works into pigments. You'll be rewarded for giving his heartfelt art your attention.

Comment by AB: Refreshingly idiosyncratic sculptures by Tim Whiten, composed of atypical ingredients fashioned into curious and whimsical composites, are certain to play games with your intellect. Go see.

Chroma Art Design : Bay Area Abstract Art - A Contrast in Styles.

Artists: April Hankins, Takeshi Nakayoshi, Mi Jung Penzien, John Smiddy, Gina Werfel

Review & images by DeWitt Cheng: Curator Geoff Smith showed a selection of representational paintings (painterly Bay-Area style) at Chroma in May of 2010, so the eponymous contrast in styles here is between figurative and abstract painting. The latter is well represented by five artists who mix nature, impulse, painterly accident, and influences as varied as Kandinsky, Matisse, Cézanne, Diebenkorn and Asian calligraphy. Good, solid work (although in an established style) without the irony, cynicism and ideological/intellectual posing that is all too common these days.
