George Krevsky Gallery : Lust for Life - Louis Grant and Arthur K. Miller.

Review by RWM: Portraits painted with style and individuality. In many cases also personality, especially Kerouac. Nice fun scenes also that appear to be from back East. Cool.

Comment by AB: Adept renditions of famous portraits of famous people by Arthur K. Miller. Whether the portraits that these paintings are painted from are in the public domain, or if they're not, whether Miller has received permission to reproduce them is unclear. Also on the docket, nostalgic family scenes with good-old-days overtones by Louis Grant that look a lot like vintage photos dating from the World War II era. Sidle on by.

Highlight Gallery : Chris Fraser - Eidolons.

Comment by AB: The show title, Eidolons, refers to a Walt Whitman poem. The word also is defined as an idealized person or thing, or a specter or phantom. All of this fits; the images are close-up pinhole photographs of surfaces of lightbulbs, each bulb identified by brand name and model number. At the rear of the gallery is a walk-in room where viewers can see what an actual pinhole projection of the surface of a lightbulb looks like. Nicely done; check it out.

Amelia Hyde Gallery : Patricia Ancona.

Comment by AB: Doll therapy. Or maybe doll as metaphor. Or maybe we're supposed to be the doll, introspect, and attain self-awareness. Or maybe we're all the doll already. Or maybe I should just go ahead and show you the pictures...

Market Street Gallery : Dissected Library - Elizabeth Ashcroft.

Review by RWM: People are not reading them much anymore so why not make something memorable and beautiful out of them. Fascinating show with creativity unbound. Books make wonderful canvases even if the results are not derivative of what the books once contained. One may say leave this sort of thing to the canvas, but that is in flux also. The art books are bound to leave an impression on those who cannot help but be captivated by them. All kinds available here.
