Ratio 3 Gallery : Ryan McGinley - YEARBOOK.

Comment by AB: Fabulous portraits by Ryan McGinley document not only personalities, but also attitudes of the times. An instant historical archive, this undraped profusion of exuberance exemplifies the artist's talents at gifting his subjects with the complete freedom and unselfconsciousness to rejoice in being themselves. A live music performance is in full throttle while I'm there... and that's eminently exceptional as well. This show's a definite yes!

Comment by AB: Ordinary everyday materials are combined into tenuously steadfast sculptures by Milan, Italy artist Alice Cattaneo.

Comment by AB: Dark geometries in natural and manmade landscapes (like airport runways) are photographed from steep angles at low aerial altitudes by Thomas Heinser. Kind of a cross between Sean McFarland and Michael Light.

Comment by AB: 111 Minna has come a long way from the days when it was half its current size and the big bronze dragonfly ruled the roost. Over its 20-year history this establishment has deservedly evolved into one of Ess Effs more respected venues for consistently showing quality art. Some people may think of it as a night club, but to me it's a gallery all the way. Good show; go see.

Misho Gallery : Dimensions.

Artists: Wendell Shinn, Takeshi Nakayoshi, Raymond Der.

Wendell Shinn's work is based on traditional photography but incorporates digital Photoshop techniques to create intriguing surrealistic images. Shinn explains that the work of Dali has been a significant influence in his art, as well as more playful sources such as Disney. Shinn studied commercial art at Baylor University and his digital tutors have included Stephen Johnson, Mark Lindsay, Jean Michel Berts.

Born and raised in Japan, Takeshi Nakayoshi relocated to California at the age of twenty. He subsequently studied at and graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute. His almost exclusively abstract work is strongly influenced by several important artists including Matisse, Diebenkorn, Motherwell and deKooning. His paintings are also influenced by his profound sensibility to Zen Buddhism, Jazz and Mesoamerican culture. Nakayoshi says he thinks of his paintings as "improvisational poems connected to a structural theme," with his primary structural theme being "the poetry of life."

Raymond Der's primary passion is hand tooled stone carving from his imagination and memories (not live models). His work is usually smaller and quite intricate and in some cases emerges from the alabaster in an almost Rodin-like fashion. These sculptural pieces are very appealing to me. Der also creates paintings and life drawings, more in an impressionist style.

The work of several other artists is also on display at the "Dimensions" show.
