Ever Gold Gallery : Exile and the Kingdom Also - Owen Takabayashi.

Comment by AB: Owen Takabayashi's month-long residency at Ever Gold is almost over. The finalists of this frolic will get all organized up and open as a solo show next week. Tonight's to-do fests this impending end with a last look at the working studio and the product that will resolve itself into an art show to be.

Wire + Nail Gallery : One Night Stand - A Sexy Night of Affordable Art and Naked Chess.

Artists: Chris Black, Maciej Makalowski, Justin Hoover, Scott Kildall, Mitsu Okubo, Clement Valla, Carissa Potter, many more.

Comment by AB: A one-night window opens just long enough for a lucky few to pick up quality artworks by proven practitioners for under $100. As if that's not enough... naked chess a la Duchamp.

The Popular Workshop : All This Happened, More Or Less. Curated by Jonathan Runcio.

Artists: Chris Baird, Taha Belal, David Benzler, Nate Boyce, Jason Kalogiros, Eric Larson, Claire Nereim, Mariah Robertson, Randy Lee Sutherland.

Comment by AB: Curator by Jonathan Runcio and his artistic posse make a compelling case for this most recent resurgence of precision abstraction a la Suprematism, Hard-Edge, and the like. One of the better shows I've seen in a while, well worth seeing, and commendably curated-- which prompts the following mini-rant...

Just between you and me and everyone who reads this, I am oh so way way tired of purportedly curated shows that are nothing more than chaotic cacophonous jumble-bumble catch basins for whatever their themes are supposed to be. The artists don't seem to care as long as they get to show something, and the curators don't seem to care as long as they can cram the gallery with enough art. Here's the deal-- either the art adheres to a strict and well-thought-out set of rules or propositions or paramaters, and is specifically created or selected or vetted by a seriously discriminating curator, or it's not. If you're gonna curate, curate-- and if you don't know how to do it right, don't call yourself a curator.
