Hosfelt Gallery : Holding It Together - Collage, Montage, Assemblage.

Artists: John Ashbery, Rina Banerjee, Joe Brainard, Sarah Cain, Nick Cave, Bruce Conner, Jean Conner, Jay DeFeo, Mathew Hale, Tim Hawkinson, Jess, Matt Lipps, Emil Lukas, Ruth Marten, Vik Muniz, Wangechi Mutu, John O'Reilly, Patricia Piccinini, Liliana Porter, Alan Rath, Ed Ruscha, Raymond Saunders, Andrew Schoultz, William T. Wiley.

Review by RWM: Big show with much to admire and think about. There are puzzling pieces that make one pause and look again and again, but it is not clear if they are meant to be cerebral. Of particular interest are disturbing fleshy pink sculptures which capture sometimes repugnant or gross encounters with the living form.

Comment by AB: Over sixty works of art by 24 artists span nearly sixty years of consummate creativity. Stop on by.

Brian Gross Fine Art : Donald Feasél - Cannery Park Paintings.

Review by RWM: You might be reminded of Jackson Pollack here, but these works capture the static and energy of the mind rather than the gut. You seem to be entering the electrical psyche in art that is invigorating and gives you reason to pause. It is not clear if the compositions are painted vertically or not, but there are clearly some ordained brush strokes here. Interesting encounters with life force that has made it onto the canvas.

Comment by AB: Donald Feasél tells me that he uses about a half-dozen bottles, each with a different type of opening, to squirt thinned acrylic paints directly onto the canvas.

Steven Wolf Fine Arts : What Keeps Mankind Alive.

Artists: Robert Fried, Victor Moscoso, Billboard Liberation Front, Anthony Discenza, Jacqueline Gordon.

Comment by AB: Art meets advertising in this crossover show starring a never-used billboard by Robert Fried for a 1969 San Francisco music festival called Wild West that never happened. Also on the docket are a Victor Moscoso mural designed for installation on MUNI busses, commercial product subversions by Billboard Liberation Front, a floor-to-ceiling homily by Anthony Discenza and auditory art by Jacqueline Gordon.
