Luggage Store Gallery : Ana T. Fernandez - Tela Arana Tela.

Comment by AB: Ana Fernandez is the proud recipient of year's Headlands Center for the Arts Tournesol Award for Painting, and this show is about that. So OK. I love the legs. Believe me, I could look at those legs all day long; legs don't get much better than Fernandez paints, draws, and videos 'em. But this is not about me, nor is it about legs. It's about Ana Fernandez. She's presented her premise, offered a poignant and compelling intro in multiple mediums as to how she perceives things, and I'm betting there's more where that comes from-- much more. That's what I'm ready for. Time to progress the plotline? Perhaps. I'm sure it's gonna be good. Speaking of good-- good show; go see.

Jancar Jones Gallery : Chris Lux - Faux Modernist Posters of Four Letter L Word Nouns.?

Comment by AB: Well, the deal here, according to the briefing, is that Chris Lux makes up a set of rules and then paints abidingly. It's just that simple. Point of information not necessarily related to this show-- when you make your own rules, it's generally best to stick with 'em for a while, timewise as well as body-of-work-wise. Why? Committment, dedication, character, principle, follow through, that kinda stuff. 'Cuz if you change your rules next week or next month or ten paintings down the road or whenever you feel like it, then what good are they? Meanwhile back at the show, Lux is off to an interesting start.

Cain Schulte Gallery : Translucent - Contemporary Works in Wax, 2nd collaboration with the International Encaustic Artists Association.

Artists: Tracey Adams, Emily Clawson, Sarah Earle, Mary Farmer, Kevin Frank, Eileen P. Goldenberg, Ruth Gooch, Sarah Grew, Howard Hersh, Carol Paxton Juliano, Lisa Kairos, Sue Katz, Kathy Knebel, Deborah Kruger, Lynda Litchfield, Hannah D. Mott, Julie Nelson, Charli Ornett, Ally Richter, Monica Lisette Sanchez, Susan Joan Schenck, Thea Schrack, Randall Steeves, Michael Teters, Rodney Thompson, Cathy Valentine, Judith Williams.

Review by DeWitt Cheng: Encaustic, despite its acerbic-sounding name, is a sweetly seductive medium, best known for its use in Jasper Johns' flag paintings, but dating back to Roman times, when it was used for portraits on coffins (if I remember my Janson correctly). This show features twenty-eight contemporary artists who use the powdered pigment/hot wax mixture. ?Sorry, no names to the art; with all those artists, anyone would get scared and give up! (Hey, galleries--?how about giving the artists lapel pins or something so we can find 'em?) I've attempted to reconstruct the show from memory, so beware; apologies for any mistakes. Good show.

Soap Gallery : Verda Alexander & Paul Kyle - Going Somewhere?

Comment by AB: Unsettling multi-channel video of planes in mid-air trouble by Paul Kyle, and a rollicking cardboard and paint rollercoaster installation of freeways gone wild by Verda Alexander.
