Comment by AB: Terrific exhibition of paintings from the collection of SFMOMA that have not been widely exhibited, but are certainly deserving of the attention they receive here. It's a delightfully quirky and esoteric assemblage themed on the Spiritual, but what makes the show great is that it includes works by artists who aren't necessarily household names, hanging right alongside those by a number of the 20th century's most celebrated art stars. Especially refreshing is that the art is not the same old "greatest hits" type of work that you see at show after show and museum after museum, but rather pieces that exemplify the breadth, scope and quality of work that these artists were capable of creating.
I love this show, however I'm nowhere near as enamored with the show's website . The structure of the page is impossible to understand-- a bunch of "blind headline" text links with no direction or explanation whatsoever other than to click on them-- and an exercise in pure random chance to navigate. You basically click a link and hope you get lucky. If we do get lucky, this will mark both the beginning and the end of such superbly inscrutable layouts. So here's what I recommend: Skip the website. See the show.
