Hosfelt Gallery : Summer Reading - Artists Interpret Literature.

Artists: Su Blackwell, Jim Campbell, Julie Chang, Amy Hicks, Andrea Higgins, Catherine McCarthy, John O'Reilly, Liliana Porter, Paul Ramirez Jonas, Lordy Rodriguez, Ana Tiscornia, Su Blackwell, Lesley Dill, Joan Grubin, Amy Hicks, Paul Ramirez Jonas, Liliana Porter, Ana Tiscornia.

Comment by AB: According to the briefing, the art in this group show represents "a conceptual response to, or interpretations of, stories, characters and texts." It's just that simple. My favorite? Shadowbox dioramas fashioned from book pages, but sorry, forgot the name of the artist.

Chandler Fine Art : Ediko Holman - Ceramic Vessels; Margaret Fitzgerald - New Paintings.?

Comment by AB: Paintings by Margaret Fitzgerald perfectly offset ceramics by Ediko Holman. Perhaps the fact that they're sisters could explain the conspicuous aesthetic symbiosis.

The Artists Alley : Grand Opening Weekend.

Comment by AB: The circuitous gallery overflows with copious cornucopias of creative fare, displaying the work of about fifty artists-- paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints, digital compositions, and more. The new location (they were formerly located on lower Gough Street) is conceivably auspicious-- on Mission Street, directly accross from Bloomingdale's.

Gallery Three : Lafe Eaves - Let It Bleed.

Review by Libby Nicholaou: Using watercolors and ink, Lafe Eaves paints animals ways that depict metaphorical human interactions. ?Incorporating well know characters from films, such as Jabba the Hut and song titles, Lafe finds influences in contemporary art forms. ?From piece to piece the recurring concept?is of energy exchange between living beings. ?While guts and destruction are quite prevalent, Eaves seems to focus on the duality of mammalian (human) nature. ?Each piece uses a rich color palate and has fine detailed line work. This is his first solo exhibit and part of the profits go to a designated wildlife preservation organization.

Sorry... no images.

Giant Robot : Yellena James - Periphery.

Review and images by Jennifer Jeffrey: Gallery and indie store Giant Robot is currently showing the work of Oregon-based artist Yellena James. Yellena works in various mediums-- most often pen, ink, and markers, but occasionally acrylics, too-- to depict languid, dreamy forms that seem vaguely scientific. The names she gives each piece reflect her whimsical bent-- Lavish, Droplet and Nightswim are among the titles of pieces currently on display. The intricate details in her work must be seen in person to be fully appreciated-- the fine small lines and elaborate swirls and stripes are mesmerizing. I find Yellena to be extremely warm and personal-- "We're thinking of moving to San Francisco," she tells me. "It's so beautiful here." I warn her that it isn't always so bright and sunny, but add that even in the fog, yes-- it is beautiful indeed.
