Thoreau Center for Sustainability : Cathy Richardson & Anneliese Vobis - Synthesia Natura, Exhibition as Experiment; Tony Maridakis - Constructs.

Comment by AB: Anneliese Vobis and Cathy Richardson present an artistic science lab of sorts that examines consequences of environmental degradation. Tony Maridakis photographs structures we're all familiar with, but at night, the results suggesting that perhaps we don't know them quite as well as we think we do.

Gallery Paule Anglim : Jim Melchert - Misfits; John Roloff - Phantom Herd & Selected Works.

Comment by AB: Jim Melchert tells me he takes ceramic tiles, shatters them on the sidewalk in front of his studio, applies glaze to the individual pieces, glues them back together, then completes the composites with inked circular grids. The good news? It works.

In the side gallery, the star of John Roloff's graphic proposals and plans for environmental projects is a plough-like device designed to travel the land and leave "elk tracks" along its path.

Review by RWM: Contemporary Korean textiles presented in wondrous and sometimes abstract designs. Cloth stitched to evoke a variety of styles. Beautiful display even with no message other than the medium.

Comment by AB: Fascinating range of works to be appreciated here. If you're a fan of textile arts, this one's a definite yes.

a.Muse Gallery : Sampled Layers of Meaning - Urban Quilts by Amy Ahlstrom.

Review by RWM: Interesting to see cloth and stitching being used to create art. Though not paint on a canvas, the works presented have bright and wonderful color schemes. There are also great associations and symbols. The assembled works present various motifs in splendiferous forms.

Comment by AB: Amy Ahlstrom's urban quilts incorporate all manner of San Francisco neighborhood landmarks. Our city artified here. Plus entertainment by Conspiracy of Beards.
