Stephen Wirtz Gallery : Angels' Share - Paintings by Marc Katano; Ulrike Palmbach - Wilderness.

Comment by AB: In the main gallery, you might call Marc Katano's ink and acrylic works on paper abstract expressionist calligraphy. In the side gallery, Ulrike Palmbach conjoins lengths of a fast growing South East Asian vine into a circuitous cable-like installation meant to symbolize the inaccessibility of the wilderness. In the hallway, she drapes carved oval wood sculptures over a rail, mimicking the appearance of a hose. Stop on by.

The McLoughlin Gallery : Guillermo Bert - Incubator.

Comment by AB: Los Angeles artist Guillermo Bert incorporates barcodes and qr codes into his textiles, sculptures and mixed media artworks. Scanning the codes allows you see or hear poems, quotations, language, and symbols from different endangered cultures. Bert tells me that he periodically changes the content that he pairs with various codes, lending a dynamic evolving component to the art, so that each time you scan them, you see or hear something different. Check it out.

Gallery Wendi Norris : Val Britton - Passage; Christine Elfman - Fix & Fade.

Comment by AB: Suspended cut paper sculpture and mixed media works on paper by Val Britton symbolize maps, geographies, and routes between various locations and destinations. Specifically, they represent memories and recollections of her father, a long-distance truck driver, and in their own ways serve to deepen her connectedness with this aspect of her past. In the rear gallery, Christine Elfman uses photosensitive materials extracted from plants to create her photographs (technically referred to as anthotypes). The subject matters have to do with constancy, change and freezing moments forever in mediums such as photography and film. Good show on both counts. Worth a visit.
