AFRICAN AMERICAN ART & CULTURE COMPLEX - GOOD VIBRATIONS
CENTRAL CITY HOSPITALITY HOUSE - ART ENGINE

The African American Art & Culture Complex : Milton Bowens - Gonna Lay My Burdens Down.

Comment by AB: Potent and impressive display of paintings, mixed media works, and collage by Bay Area artist Milton Bowens. The show is divided into three sections-- "Blood on the Fields," "What Becomes of a Broken Soul," and "Trying to Find My Way Home." Bowens tells me he's in an upcoming show on censorship at the San Francisco Center for the Book, and has a solo show opening soon in Atlanta, GA. Good stuff; the dude lays it out. Definitely worth a visit.

Comment by AB: Annual fundraiser art auction for Central City Hospitality House, serving the homeless community in San Francisco's Tenderloin district since 1967. Great cause; plenty of worthy art on the block. Of note here, Justin Giarla, owner of The Shooting Gallery (located on the edge of the Tenderloin), donated 15 works of art to the event.

Art Engine : Raylene Gorum - New Constructions.

Comment by AB: Raylene Gorum uses her training as an architect to present cities the way they hopefully one day will be-- more vegitation, more bird and animal life, clean car-less streets, more inviting, more human, and ideals like that. Her mixed-media techniques encompass orgami, tape, mylar, spraypaint, and more. A number of pieces are framed under non-glare glass which somewhat blunts their impact.
