Jessica Silverman Gallery : Ruairiadh O'Connell - Invisible Green.

Comment by AB: Ruairiadh O'Connell creates this series of "wax paintings" by silkscreening patterns sourced from gambling casino carpets onto industrial wax that's been infused with oil pigment and poured into steel frames. Also on display are "railing sculptures" that divide the gallery space like fences. The art's solidly constructed and has a rawness about it that's particularly appealing. Stop on by.

Fouladi Projects : New paintings by Rudi Molacek.

Review by RWM: Fun freeform abstracts. Not a lot of message here, but the emotions are soaring. It is nice to frolic in these images which honor colors and connections. Could be a welcome addition to the house and unexpectedly pleasing. They're a bit rude in the sense that conventions are not followed, but expressionist in the sense that the art moves beyond the canvas.

The LAB : That that is is that that is not is not is that it it is. Curated by Aaron Harbour and Jackie Im.

Artists: Jason Benson, Sara Cwynar, Honza Hoeck, Erin Jane Nelson, Puppies Puppies, Brion Nuda Rosch.

Comment by AB: Big space, sparse art. The art ranges from pretty good to pretty inscrutable, but no matter how you stack it up, there's way too little of it. Next time you get a hold of a great exhibition space like this, take advantage of it. Oh... and that goes for the artists too. Looks like some of the art in the show took about fifteen minutes to make or like the artist was thinking, "I'll whip something up, ascribe momentous meaning to it, and then get back to whatever else I'm doing that's more important."

Recology Artist in Residence Exhibitions : Matthew Gottschalk - From the Belly of the Whale; Jamil Hellu - Portraits; Claire Lynch - Befriending Demons.

Comment by AB: While I LOVE the visual manifestations of Recology's art program, the statements for the shows are getting a mite hifalutin for the card-carrying trash-discarding populace (of which I am one) who supports this endeavor via our bi-monthly bills. We have enough irrelevant ineffectual members-only art cabals already, each with their own magniloquent languages. No need to pile on more. Let's have explanations we can all understand please, and while I'm at it, forget the references to specific people, places, writings, incidents or histories. I don't want to have to do additional homework just so I can get up to speed about what's supposedly going on. Plus when you're not entirely sure who made what after reading the statements... that's a problem as well. Anyway, tonight's fare consists of photographic and video "portraits" by Jamil Hellu, installations and video by Matthew Gottschalk, and bird sculptures by Claire Lynch. Good art and worth a look.

Park Life : Jacob Mcgraw-Mikelson & Rachell Sumpter - Home Again Home Again.

Comment by AB: Details abound in embroideries and gouache paintings on paper by Jacob Mcgraw-Mikelson and more gouache by Rachell Sumpter. It's practically a gouache-a-thon. Close inspection has an upside here. Colorful, fanciful and imaginative all the way around.
