Comment: Rigo 23, in a style inclined to elicit provocative contemplation, recounts seminal socio-political moments in modern Bay Area history with a series of large-scale paintings, each accompanied by a handmade zine eleborating on the event's antecedents, the event itself, and the aftermath. Progressive evolutionary activisim and social change often start right here in San Francisco and environs, and this art is about that. Compelling effective show; go see.

Electric Works : Tucker Nichols - Placemat Drawings; Katherine Sherwood.
Comment: Electric Works, formerly Trillium Press, caps their auspicious and long-awaited relocation from the wilds of Brisbane to their cherry new digs in urbane Ess Eff with tonight's grand opening hoedown. Everybody's there-- even me. The evening's featured presenters are Tucker Nichols, rendering a set of abbreviated homilies on reclaimed placemats, ranging from cryptic to amusing, and snappy abstracts by Katherine Sherwood which evolve traditional painting via digital techniques. Plus special guest appearance by a miniature poodle sporting a devil red pedicure. Arf arf!

Mission Arts Foundation : Mission Open Studios.
Artists: Loads.
Comment: The inaugural episode of this mega convocation of The Mission's creative contingent-- 300+ artists at nine venues open their studios for the weekend. The throngs are jaunty at festive 1890 Bryant Street , mellower at Compound 21 , and that's basically all I have time for. From the looks of things, opening night is a certain success. Hopefully the rest of the weekend goes well, and we'll see episode 2 of Mission Open Studios in the not-too-distant future.
