Electric Works Gallery : After Glow, As the Wick Burns - Robert Minervini.

Comment by AB: In the style of the Old Masters, Robert Minervini paints elaborate floral still-lifes, but with ghostly animal accents, against dense urban backdrops. The point of it all? Unregulated unchecked urban and industrial growth has downsides that we should all become (increasingly) diligent about monitoring. Or you can forget about all that apocalpytic stuff and just plain appreciate the quality of the art. Stop on by.

There's no store like it in San Francisco, guaranteed. Stop in and check it out for yourselves. But before you do that, head on over to the Luggage Store Gallery and experience this seriously impressive survey of artists whose work they've shown over the past decade. Recommended viewing.

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts : Want.Here.You.Now

Artists: Kenneth Lo, Ana Teresa Fernandez, Jennifer Locke.

Comment by AB: In the Room for Big Ideas, three artists use light, photography, video, text and mirrors to get make their statements. Jennifer Locke shows videos of performances she did with YBCA visitors in their homes with only the camera watching, Ana Teresa Fernandez lights up the word FIND (almost always a better word than lose), and Kenneth Lo memorializes a relationship gone belly-up.

The LAB : Clare Szydlowski - Approved Colors.

Comment by AB: Clare Szydlowski comments on the oppression of homeowners associations in suburban developments, particularly in terms of colors that they are allowed to use when painting their homes. She uses swatches of those colors to make her art so that we can appreciate the beauty of banality just as much as the homeowners do.

Adobe Books Backroom Gallery : Luminous Flux - Laura Sutro.

Review by RWM: Cool landscapes with varying degrees of abstraction. Art works found along the continuum of realistic and abstract. One does not get lost, but rather can react to what is on display.

Comment by AB: Mystery, desolation and indeterminate occurrences in the night characterize the art of Laura Sutro + a single figurative work, the whole shebang tricked out with odd lighting.

Mission Grafica at Mission Cultural Center : New screen prints by Calixto Robles and lithographs and screen prints by Cecile Robles-Blum.

Review by RWM: Cool multi-generational show with art by both father and four-year old daughter on display. Great soulful work. Better if one knows Spanish, but the images keep one's attention. Here one will find depth of expression even if not fully penetrable.
