San Francisco Art Institute : Wrong's What I Do Best. Curated by Hesse McGraw and Aaron Spangler.

Artists: Tanyth Berkeley, Ashley Bickerton, CLUB PAINT, Liz Cohen, Wim Delvoye, Samara Golden, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Brad Kahlhamer, Nikki S. Lee, Jonathan Meese, Laurel Nakadate, Dana Schutz, Aaron Storck, Marianne Vitale, Kara Walker.

Comment by AB: I get the part about failure being good; in fact it's an essential ingredient of success. The exhibition may also be proffering the hypothesis that being bad (as in degenerate or retrograde or even insurgent) is OK, and perhaps even good. Or according to the exhibition's preamble, "Working against both correctness and failure, Wrong's What I Do Best revels in repeated derailments to present the work of artists who prod the edges of our world." As far as I'm concerned, you can prod the edges all you want as long as the upshot of the prod benefits more than just your raunchy reputation or descent into decadency. There seems to be little point in lauding those values these days other than playing to an audience that's already lost. America's trying to get itself back on track, remember?

Bash Contemporary : Unconcealed - Gale Hart.

Comment by AB: Gale Hart explores gun culture from multiple perspectives-- pro gun, anti gun, as a gun owner, as a gun wielder, as a gun maker, guns as sculpture, guns as power, the social and political aspects of guns, and more-- in both paintings and sculptures. How do you sculpt a gun? Become a machinist, and Hart learned the profession well. Go see, contemplate and appreciate the impressive depth of work on display. You won't be disappointed.

Steven Wolf Fine Arts : Sinne Spegel - Anne McGuire and Karla Milosevich.

Comment by AB: Anne McGuire and Karla Milosevich are huge fans of Ingmar Bergman's 1966 film Persona. So what do they do about it? Insert themselves into the plot and become one with the oeuvre. Three screens of simultaneous overlapping action. Nicely done.

Alter Space : It Takes a Village - The Cradle Project.

Artists: Alexis Arnold, Morse Cosmos, Heidi Cramer, Jamie Emerick, Jane Farrar, Jorge Garcia, Vanesa Gingold, Matthew Gottschalk, Becky Johnson, Roderick Kiracofe, Kevin Krueger, Christina La Sala, Ben Marlowe, Meghan Martin, Wes Modes, Yulia Pinkusevich, Mie Preckler, Shushan Tesfuzigta, Luke Wilson, Lisa Wood, Laamsha Young, more.

Comment by AB: "The Cradle Project is a collaboration between participating contemporary artists and Firelight Foundation that harnesses the power of art to make the plight of children orphaned and made vulnerable by poverty and AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa visible." Fifty artist cradles are on display including 21 by Bay Area artists. All sales proceeds go to the Firelight Foundation. Good art for a noble cause.
