Comment by AB: Legions of art lovers turn out to show their support for ArtSpan's annual fundraiser benefit auction. Over 100 works of art are up for bids at both live and silent auctions. Proceeds go towards ArtSpans's efforts to support San Francisco artists through workshops, exhibitions, meetings, educational programs, financial aid, open studios, and more... including art classes for under-served youth. Now that's a cause worth supporting.

Root Division : Edible Ephemera - Taste 2013 Preview.

Artists: Lynne-Rachel Altman, Sita Kuratomi Bhaumik, Victoria DeBlassie, Christine Elfman, Julia Goodman, Larissa Erin Greer, Adrienne Pao, Phil Ross, Paolo Salvagione, Leonard Suryajaya, Claudia Tennyson, Rene Yung.

Review by Anneliese Vobis: Living brick walls created out of fungus, magical elixir wonder drinks, an ornamental painting made of curry powder, nicely framed food projects, delicious ice cream topped with edible eyes, and many other exciting presentations transform the gallery into a Wunderkammer of the senses-- a second closer investigation is highly recommended.

ArtZone 461 : José Ramón Lerma, Bay Area Artist - A Sixty Year Retrospective and Selections from His Collection.

Artists: Dorr Bothwell, Dimitri Grachis, Roy De Forest, Howard Foote, Mel Hanson, Juan Sandoval, Ruth Wall, Julius Wasserstein, Imogene Cunningham, William T. Wiley, more.

Review by Mark Gould: The 60-year retrospective at ArtZone 461 honors José Ramón Lerma for his significant contribution to the Bay Area and West Coast Abstract Art movements, and Beat Art in San Francisco, beginning in the early 1950's when he was a student at the San Francisco Art Institute. His peers include Wallace Berman, Bruce Conner, Luis Cervantes and Jay DeFeo. He experimented across genres and defied categorization.

This is a brilliant collection of works by a fiercely independent artist (and a number of friends) who rebelled against commercialism and the commoditization of art. His range across genres is exquisite and in addition to Lerma and friends artwork, this show is rich with California, Bay Area and San Francisco art history. Definitely worth seeing.

Review by Anneliese Vobis: The artist's work has a very strong abstract expressionistic voice. Vibrant colors and dynamic painting style lead the audience in Lerma's meaningful cosmology. His assemblages are the ideal contrast with their figurative storytelling qualities and recognizable messages.

Guerrero Gallery : Andrea Sonnenberg, Ted Pushinsky, and Travis Jensen.

Review by Anneliese Vobis: Portraits characteristic of San Francisco's socio-cultural makeup are the central focus of this exhibition. The black and white images in particular convey strong emotional experiences; we can easily get lost in an dialogue between art and culture.

Comment by AB: Good work on all counts; check it out.
