Romer Young Gallery : Erik Scollon - A Moment Lasts Forever Until It's Gone.

Comment by AB: Whimsical porcelains and works on paper by Erik Scollon include cleanly crafted unfinished woooden shelves, tables and pedestals on which to display them. Stop on by.

ArtHaus Gallery : The Chosen Ones; 2013 Mobile Photography Awards; Mirang Wonne.

Artists & photographers: Greg Drasler, Rex Ray, Jeffery Ketcham, Maxine Solomon, Gioi Tran, Franc D'Ambrosio, Suzanne Benton, Serena Bocchino, Marc Lambrechts, Jhina Alvarado, Carolyn Meyer, Matthew Frederick, Brian Blood, Kenny Mencher, Melissa Vincent, Jen Pollack Bianco, Benamon Tame.

Comment by AB: In the main gallery is a group show of works by ArtHaus artists selected by area designers; in the front gallery is a selection of award-winning surrealish photographs taken and edited on mobile devices; in the side gallery view mixed-media works on panel by Mirang Wonne.

Now that the official business has been taken care of, your gallery is several blocks from Giants stadium so please oh please oh please oh please plan your openings for days when the Giants are out of town-- let alone on OPENING DAY!!! Really. They decide their schedule far before you decide yours, so take a moment or two, go to sfgiants.com and make sure there's no overlap between your openings and their ballgames. Sheesh.

Center for Sex and Culture : The Evoco Project - Recent Work by Midori.

Comment by AB: Midori binds her subjects, inks them up, "prints" them on paper, and then transforms sections of the modernist results into classic Chinese scrolls. For those of you keeping score at home, Midori is accomplished at Japanese rope bondage and has even authored a book on the discipline. Nicely done.

111 Minna Gallery : Michael Garlington - Constructed Realities; Jonny - Who Is Jonny?

Review by RWM: Old time stories. Precode. The nude in someone's history and back story. One maybe able to hear the bluegrass music from this Wild West show.

Comment by AB: In the Zappa Gallery, Michael Garlington shows a haunting series of photographs shot, developed and printed by traditional means (aka zero use of digital), and displayed in fantastic assemblage frames. Also on the docket are several elaborate glass crucifixes, each with embedded photographs. The complete presentation recalls other times with its distinct vintage feel, the toned black & white photographs in particular (mainly posed portraits of Garlington's friends and acquaintances) . This show's a definite yes. I love it.

In 111 Minna's 2nd St. Gallery, Jonny riffs on pop culture icons and sundry urban occurrences, the work at times looking a mite like semi-representational Banksy's. At the entrance to the space, a credit card map of America reminds us that we're all in hock up to our eyeballs... and beyond.
