Scenius Gallery : Tim Roseborough - No One Dies in a Make-Believe War.

Comment by AB: For Scenius Gallery's debut event, artist and owner Tim Roseborough tells me that in video games, soldiers disappear the moment they die. He here presents an alternative version where the opposite happens-- instead of disappearing, soldiers' bodies remain in pools of blood, at times dismembered, with mortal wounds clearly visible-- and players get to witness and contemplate the consequences of their deadly acts. It ain't pretty, but I like it.

Adobe Books Backroom Gallery : Garth Thompson-Vieira - The Mask of Civilization... Sutures, Schisms and Decay.

Review by R.W. Miller: A reaction to the gentrification struggles in the Mission District, Garth Thompson-Vieira's show at the Adobe Back Room captures the difficulties in maintaining civilization in the face of conflicting ideologies and concerns. Crime coexists with creativity in this neighborhood which seeks to resolve its sociological and class conflicts. Artists and students fight to make the neighborhood more accessible and tell stories of that struggle. The figures presented here in collage and mixed media are anguished and distorted, reactions to the intense challenges of modern day life. Though they may look contorted and abused, they respond with resilience and fortitude. The art presented confronts pain and disillusionment, but change is on the way.

Hatch Gallery , Oakland: While it lasts.

Artists: Katelin Dutton, Gabriela Hernandez-Lepe, Baylee Hikawa, Brooke Lawton, Ted Levine, Amanda Quiroz, Paala Secor, David Snow, Sam Strand.

Review and images by DeWitt Cheng: This is a extremely well-mounted exhibition by a California College of Arts Professional Practices class taught by artist Michele Pred. The nine students, who range from Freshman through Senior, take a variety of approaches from relatively straight photography through abstraction to installation. Nice work, nicely displayed.
