Anthony Meier Fine Arts : Roy McMakin - Two Chairs (One Green, One Black), A Chest of Drawers, A Table, A Little Stool, A Photograph and a few Drawings.

Comment by AB: Artist, designer and furniture maker Roy McMakin takes pieces of warn used furniture (which are mounted on the gallery walls) and recreates some exactly (but pristine), some in contemporary riffs on the originals, and one he mounts as a sculpture, although considered artistically, they're all sculptures. Vision + the technical skills necessary to materialize it = good art, which is precisely what we have here. To top it all off, he seasons the shebang with a selection of pencil drawings to illustrate his points. Good show; go see.

Jenkins Johnson Gallery : Gordon Parks - Centennial.

Comment by AB: According to the handout, "Gordon Parks is the most important black photographer in the history of photojournalism." Whether that's a fact or an opinion is immaterial because either way, he's right up there near the top. In celebration of his 100th birthday, this impressive retrospective is not only a testament to his talent, but also a look back at the past seventy years or so of American history as seen through the lens of his camera. The color images of segregation days in the Old South are an absolute must-see and range from poignant to distressing. To think that we once treated our each other like this. Definitely worth a visit.

Altman Siegel Gallery : Will Rogan - Blanking Out.

Comment by RWM: Unusual and unexpected pieces that defy prediction and expectations.

Comment by AB: Much of Will Rogan's art references artist from the past, homaging some and satirizing others, but in the most respectful of ways. He works in a variety of mediums, all exceptionally well. Recommended viewing.
