Comment by AB: According to the briefing, the "Ancient City" concept has to do with the rapid transformation of San Francisco, preservation versus progress, and that kind of stuff, the art purportedly embodying said essences. I'm not really gleaning any of this by looking at the art, so I'm simply gonna christen it a group show, plain and simple, but a good group show. And a major turnout for the event-- especially at the wine table.

Comment by AB: Seven Copenhagen artists known as the Koh-i-noor Collective trundle their collaborative creative nature across the sea and over the mountains to good old SF (actually, they probably flew), their mission to mount an exhibit of work which is a reaction to work shown by San Francisco artists in Copenhagen last year. Hey-- that's what it says. Anyway, there's all manner shenanigans going on including a video visit to San Francisco consisting entirely of images purloined from the internet and narrated by artist Marie Kolding Lund's grandmother, a dude working a hand cranked knitting machine which produces an endless purposeless tube of yarn, and my favorite, Jesper Carlsen's adeptly engineered video of himself throwing a ball against a wall. He projects the video at one corner of the gallery in such a way as to create the illusion that he's actually standing in the gallery and throwing a ball against a wall.
In the entrance space, Martha Sue Harris essays on the relationships of plants to animals via an installation of paintings, soft sculpture, and video.

Comment by AB: This show's bona fide excellent from both contemporary and historical perspectives-- you got Black Panther icon and artist Emory Douglas right here signing copies of his new book, "Black Panther, The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas," a selection of new and vintage works by Douglas, and archived copies of "The Black Panther" newspaper lining the walls of the gallery, all with intense impactful subversive cover illustrations by Douglas (he couldn't be nicer, by the way). Don't miss this. Seminal moments in social change.
