Hackett Mill Gallery : Manuel Neri - Working in Marble, A Selection from the Carrara Studio.

Comment by AB: An exquisite selection of Manuel Neri marble sculptures, mainly torsos, spans about twenty years of work dating from the early 1980s through the early 2000s. Definitely recommended.

    1AM Gallery : J.S. Weis - Liquid Hymn.

Comment by AB: This is the first solo show of paintings by Oakland artist J S Weis. His style is notably unique, combining watercolor with intricate build-ups of paper shapes in these works on paper. The intriguing compositions are filled with deftly drafted birds, insects and animals emerging from colorful indeterminate mists. Stop on by; worth a look.

Gallery 16 : Jason Jägel - From the Sky Rivers Look Like Snakes.

Comment by AB: A new series of uncomplicated oversized oil paintings, particularly the somewhat unsettling portraits, makes this healthy survey of Jason Jägel's work worthy of a perusal. But there's plenty more to see here as well including several sculptures, several 3D "exploded view" style paintings, silhouettes painted into photographs, and his signature complex abstract textual representational blends, rich with action and characters, and reminiscent of the paintings and drawings of George Grosz. Check it out.

Museum of Craft and Design : A Sense of Balance - The Sculpture of Stoney Lamar; Obsessive Reductive.

Obsessive Reductive artists: Drew Daly, Brian Dettmer, Jim Dingilian, Adam Feibelman, Theresa Ganz, Cal Lane, Bovey Lee, Chris Natrop, Aric Obrosey, Francesca Pastine, Lyndi Sales, Jill Silva, Leigh Salgado, Farnaz Shadravan, Kako Ueda, Annie Vought, Elise Wehle, Jared Yamanuha. Curated by Marc D'Estout.

Comment by AB: In the main gallery, wood sculptures by Stoney Lamar seem in perfect harmony with raw pieces from which they are carved. Some have natural earthy looks; others are polished, architectural, and reach upward like diminutive skyscrapers. In the rear gallery, conscientious commitment and painstaking meticulousness rule. The art here demonstrates the passion and unwavering dedication that's required for artistic success. It's all good; go see.

Southern Exposure : White Hot Lamp Black.

Artists: Carrie Hott, Dario Robleto, Laura Steenberge, Hillary Wiedemann.

Comment by AB: This one's all about light and the many ways in which it impacts our lives, not only in a utilitarian sense, but also as a medium for creating art, not to mention as a contemplation on the the bigger picture-- as an entity that allows us to exist.
