Comment by AB: Ginger Wolfe-Suarez tells me her art involves manipulating or altering space, and our perceptions in that regard. She's got some carpentry skills. Plus she can cast-- as evidenced by a pair of footworn running shoes commemorated in concrete.

Comment by AB: I'm partial to the Victor Cartagena's intense installation, Transparencias, in the anteroom at the rear of the gallery, a compelling perspective on the migratory experience. Some people would want you to believe that these so-called unwelcome unwanted border crossers are all terrorists and job stealers, but you know-- in many ways, they're the new backbone of this nation. Now don't forget everything else in the show, a cutting edge assessment of of Bay Area printmaking. In general, I'm likin' the fresh new direction here at SOMArts.

Mina Dresden Gallery : Truong Tran - Lost and Found.
Review and images by Dan Peknik: Excellent turnout for the artist Truong Tran tonight at Mina Dresden Gallery. The show consists of twenty-two pieces that manage to marry a sculptural style and design aesthetic with theatrical mood lighting and presentation. Found objects such as hypodermic needles, doll heads, animal antlers and a panoply of materials are assembled into a cohesive whole that reads as playful and inventive. Mature understanding of repetition and use of color-- organic and inorganic forms are contained within rigid boxes-- backlit elements selectively creating subtle silhouettes. A fine showing for Truong Tran and a unique exhibit well worth exploring.

International Fine Print Dealers Association at Fort Mason: The San Francisco Fine Print Fair - 2010.
Review and images by Mike Kimball: This is the annual print sale by members of the International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA) held at Fort Mason Center. 18 galleries participate and of those, four are new, including Arion Press of San Francisco, and Warnock Fine Arts of Palm Springs, CA (formerly of San Francisco.)
All artworks on display are either prints and works on paper, with galleries often specializing in particular printmaking categories (such as Japanese woodblock prints, European prints of the Renaissance, American modernists, etc.), so for print enthusiasts, there's something for everyone. One particular dealer, Dolan/Maxwell Gallery of Philadelphia, PA stands out by showing works on paper by artist Cheryl Warrick in an otherwise staid field of the usual predictable print offerings.

Fifty24SF Gallery : Character Assassination - David Choe.
Review by Sandra Silvoy: David Choe opening. Line down the block. Half hour wait. Furiously energetic works in "Character Assassination" show at Fifty24SF. My favorite piece "Deathblossom" was actually made for and shown in Choe's April 2009 "Deathblossom" show at PYO gallery in China. "Character Assassination" is somewhat of a chaotic mishmash with his work taking different directions. Some pieces, as I named earlier, are more detailed and elegant while others possess a harsh and dark emotional quality. He paints the gallery walls black and does a bit o' graffiti to to top it off.
