Highlight Gallery : Manor Grunewald - Up to Maximum Freedom, or Down to the Ant Heap.

Comment by AB: The range of works on exhibit by Belgian artist Manor Grunewald includes abstractions, collages and text-based compositions. Intents, references and associations among various images are not immediately apparent, but an agenda is clearly in evidence.

Luggage Store Gallery : Adriane Colburn - Of Darkness.

Comment by AB: Adriane Colburn puts an exceptionally impressive amount of time, forethought, care and effort into this expansive installation. Cut paper, video, large-scale wood sculpture, digital images and more comprise this imagined reality where natural and unnatural coexist in a delicate labyrinthine balance. Even while I'm talking to Colburn about her art, she notices an unfinished detail in her work and notes that she'll attend to it later. Ever dedicated, committed, placing artistry ahead of commerciality, doing what she feels she needs to do regardless of how it may or may not play to the public-- these are reasons why I respect and admire not only her art, but also everything she stands for. Worth a visit.

Center for Sex and Culture : From the Collection of Larry Townsend.

Artists: Macbeth, Olaf, Sean, Orsen, Russ, Dennis, Zane, DP, more.

Comment by AB: Larry Townsend had a good deal of influence on San Francisco's leather culture. He was also a serious art, document and memorabilia collector. A generous sampling of that collection is on exhibit here, and for you fans of vintage homoerotica, this is one bodacious bonanza. See for yourself.

SOMArts Gallery : Peter Max Lawrence and Truong Tran - At War.

Comment by AB: According to the blurb, "a demilitarized zone line bisects the gallery for Peter Max and Truong's dueling installations in At War, an exhibition of identities in conflict, February 3-29. On display are hundreds of paintings, drawings, videos, and sculptures which incorporate religious elements, assumptive queer histories, and war iconography." The sole commonality here is that the artists were required to produce prodigious amounts of art in order to fill the cavernous exhibition space... and they did. On one side you've got Troung's meticulous and elaborate grid works featuring, among other things, ping pong balls and wishbones. On the other, Peter Max Lawrence just plain piles it up and lays it on. Stop on by.

The LAB : Head of the Table. Curated by Sean Bennett and Michael Ryan.

Artists: Sean Bennett, Carlos Castellanos, Robert Damphousse, Mary Franck, Bradley Hyppa, Lizabeth Eva Rossof, Greg Zifcak.

Comment by AB: The exhibit consists of art by artists who worked in varying capacities with the late Steve Wilson, professor of Conceptual and Information Arts at San Francisco State University. Of note are a magnetic sculpture by Sean Bennett and a surreal video/drawing installation by Mary Franck that injects life into a block of buildings in The City.

Southern Exposure : Jimbo Blachly and Lytle Shaw - Selected Shipwrecks; Aaron Maietta - Condensation Range; Soft Turns (Sarah Jane Gorlitz and Wojciech Olejnik) - Behind the High Grass.

Comment by AB: Shipwreck art by Jimbo Blachly and Lytle Shaw recounts the exploits and adventures of the Chadwick Family, a clan who has apparently mastered the art of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Aaron Maietta photographically documents the putting up and taking down of art in the Southern Exposure space. Soft Turns (Sarah Jane Gorlitz and Wojciech Olejnik), via concept, display and video, endeavor to conceptually piece together the journeys of a pair of Czech explorers.

Vessel Gallery : Between Wind and Water - Beili Liu.

Review and images by Clare Coppel: Black and white paintings of curving lines and shapes. A very tense installion of two black arrow-like poles pointing at each other with thin white strings extending out of them, makes one think of magnets or human relationships or quills of an animal.
