McKinley Art Solutions at Hotel Triton : Alexander von Wolff.

Review by RWM: Nice to see the old stories not being forgotten or ignored, and to revel in the nostalgia. The artist confesses that the era pictured in his enlarged matchbook prints is of a time he would have prefered to live in. The images evoke an idealized past for those of us who do not idealize the current. Fun to be transported back to these places where people went for amusement. The memories of the times still live on the screen and in the psyches of individuals and artists who do not always welcome the modernization that has replaced the good old "normal" days, but not all has changed.

Comment by AB: Alexander von Wolff reconfigures vintage matchbook covers into prints and in so doing, presents viewers with romantic reminiscences of our liesure time history.

RayKo Photo Center : Lost and Found - Heidi Kirkpatrick; Vanishing Point, Exercises in Perspective - Curated by Rachel Phillips; New Visions - 81 Bees Collective of City College of San Francisco.

Comment by AB: In one of the better shows I've seen at RayKo in a good while, Rachel Phillips "curates" members of the Phantom Artists' League-- Madge Cameron, Tabatha Christy, Frances Pane, Abe Rah-Kadabra and Will Fox. The League photographers (some of whom are plays on names of famous early photographers) are actually none other Phillips herself as she demonstrates a prodigious mastery of the medium, entertaining us all along the way with fictionalized accounts by League members accompanied by photographic works which embrace a diverse range of subjects, formats and techniques. Definitely worth a visit.

Also on the docket are photographs applied to found objects by Heidi Kirkpatrick, the results manifesting a distinct antique feel, and a group show by CCSF's 81 Bees Collective.

CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts : Codex; Hiller/Martin - Provisional Realities (Susan Hiller & Daria Martin).

Codex artists: Anonymous, Dove Allouche, Matthew Bakkom, John Baldessari, Laetitia Benat, Lisa Bonard, Alexandrine Boyer, Marcel Broodthaers, Heman Chong, Claude Closky, Robert Crumb, Moyra Davey, Marina Faust, Esther Shalev Gerz, Philip Guston, Aaron Krach, Vincent Labaume, Louise Lawler, Pierre Leguillon, Jean-Baptiste Maitre, Barry McGee, Jerry McMillan, Aurelien Mole, Jean-Luc Moulène, Damián Navarro, Dennis Oppenheim, Raymond Pettibon, Veronique Portal, Conny Purtill, Dider Rittener, Allen Ruppersberg, Ed Ruscha, David Scher, Cindy Sherman, Yann Serandour, Rafael Serrano, Alec Soth, Saul Steinberg, Jean-Luc Verna, William Wegman.

Comment by AB: The group show Codex in the front gallery is art themed on books, archives, libraries and the significance of printed word in history. None of the art is labeled so you can treat the exhibition as a quiz and see how many artists' names you get right. In the rear gallery, Susan Hiller and Daria Martin exhibit video and photographic works, the most riveting of which is a two-screened video of amalgamated motion picture dream scenes.
