Comment by AB: Swiss artist Zimoun debuts his precision "kinetic sound sculptures" here at Gray Area Foundation. His regimented installations of dc-motors with various attached appurtenances whir in unison, perhaps simulating what might likened to mechanical Om effects. The photos don't do justice; you really have to see (and hear) these.

Comment by AB: Survey of work by five Chicana visual artists essays on the Chicano civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and is on exhibit at both CIIS's Mission and Minna Street locations. Festivities include an SRO panel discussion this evening. Also on display at the Mission Street location are Wendel White's contemplative photographs of iconic objects, artifacts and documents of slavery, Reconstruction and civil rights, isolated out of their archival collections and presented against plain backgrounds, thereby accentuating their impacts on the course of American history (sorry about the reflections on the pics).

ArtZone 461 Gallery : Randy Beckelheimer - Wider Views of Urban San Francisco; Small Works.
Review by RWM: Interesting exploration of place by Randy Beckelheimer. Sense of place is a fascinating subject to nature writers of late. One finds here the city landscape captured when the time is right-- old buildings with history. Beautiful yet solemn presentation of the San Francisco shipping yards, but beautiful sunsets either way. Sometimes there is movement, sometimes silence for introspection. These portrayals of place remind us of the variability of experience and expectations. We learn what is possible, look back at we have done, and move forward from our mistakes.
In the side gallery, peruse a generous selection of affordably priced smaller works-- impressive and variegated.

Mission Comics and Art : The Last Stand - Bean Gilsdorf.
Review by RWM: Powerful and intense anti-war statement. See here the dehumanization involved-- the faceless, nameless, unknown and sacrificed. Not everything is evident in the hanging tapestries and other pieces. Faces are obliterated or painted in gray. You can't help but think about the countless anonymous participants, and of tragedy rather than jingoism.
